All the critics are raving about this movie and I’m scratching my head. I like a lot of the Coen Brothers movies, but this one stinks. It’s got no real plot, the main character is a total jerk. There are a few characters that you almost want to like, but can’t. A lot of brooding shots of the characters being all sad, mad or frustrated. I didn’t like it at all.
Justin Timberlake was good. He looked like a typical early ’60s well scrubbed earnest go getter. But his part was over early on. John Goodman was excellent at being weird. But when his part was over, I wondered what was that all about?
I love the recreated street scenes of New York and Chicago in the early 60s, especially the cars. I’d give it one star out of 4 just because I want to cut the Coen brothers some slack, and I’m sorry, but I really, really, really didn’t like this movie. Really.
