There is a controversy among some online sellers about including packing slips with purchases. Some sellers think they use too much paper and toner. Others complain that the customer has all the information online anyway. Still others consider the practice a waste of time. We respectfully disagree.
Johnny-Sells always includes packing slips with shipments. Not only do packing slips look professional, they offer an opportunity to promote our store and give our customer a chance to contact us directly, rather than eBay or Amazon or other third party, should something go wrong. We can fix a problem more quickly if we handle it directly. Packing slips are especially important selling on Amazon and other sites where the customer may think he or she is dealing with the main site and not an individual seller.
But another reason is security. We once sold a set of Noritake china to a lady in the Outback of Australia. She was so polite, she only asked about her missing package 2 months after her purchase. We tried to track it down, but it had vanished. We refunded the customer’s payment. Four months later, we got a phone call from a very nice postal worker in suburban Chicago (about an hour away from us). They had the plates! It turns out that Customs, (not the USPS) had redirected the package to Portugal for some reason. It sat in their dead letter office for months, until a postal worker there had the idea to include it with a package of Portuguese delicacies that was going to a former Lisbon resident who had moved to the US.
The Portuguese/American buyer had no idea as to what to do with the plates, so she called her local post office to return it to them. A diligent USPS worker opened the package, found our packing slip with our phone number and called us. We were happy to drive out there to get it. We contacted our Australian customer. She was thrilled and paid us again. We shipped the Noritake a second time. This time it got there quickly.
It all turned out okay thanks to that packing slip. We try to be as economical and ecological as we can in all areas of our business, but there are some things you can cut back on and some things that are necessary. We believe packing slips are necessary, especially in international shipments. That’s why a packing slip and a business card are included in every Johnny-Sells purchase.
