Challah for the Challadays!

Janet Treuhaft of Johnny-Sells shows how to make delicious Challah Bread for the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashana or anytime!

Here’s the recipe:

2 1/4 teaspoons yeast, 2 tsp. sugar, 1 1/4 cup warm water, 4 1/2 cups sifted flour, 4 tbsp. poppy seed, 2 tsp. salt, 2 eggs, 2 tbsp salad oil, 1 egg yolk

Combine yeast, sugar and 1/4 cup warm water and let stand 5 minutes.  Sift flour and salt into a bowl, making a well in the center. Drop in eggs, oil, remaining water and yeast mixture.  Work into the flour.  Knead on a floured surface until smooth and elastic.  Place in a bowl and brush top with a little oil.  Cover with towel.  Set in a warm place.  Let rise 1 hour.

Divide the dough into 3 equal parts.  Between floured hands, roll the dough into 3 strips of equal length.  Braid strips together and place on baking pan.  Cover with towel.  Let rise until double in bulk.  Brush with egg yolk and sprinkle with poppy seed.  Bake in a pre heated 350 degree oven.  Bake for 50 minutes or until golden brown.  Enjoy!
